The Long Run

Charlie is the co-author of “The Long Run: A New York City Firefighter’s Triumphant Comeback from Crash Victim to Elite Athlete” (Rodale). The book shares the emotional and incredibly honest story of firefighter Matt Long’s determination to fight through fear, despair, loneliness, and intense physical and psychological pain following a devastating accident. “The Long Run” chronicles Long’s road to recovery as he teaches himself to walk again and then, more than three years later, to run the New York City Marathon.

“The Long Run” developed from a poignant profile of Long that Charlie wrote for the March 2009 issue of Runner’s World.

During the year leading up to the 2016 Rio Olympics, Charlie interviewed Bob Bowman, the acclaimed swim Olympic swim coach and coach of Olympic champion Michael Phelps, discerning the secrets of one of the sport world’s most successful coaches. In “The Golden Rules: 10 Steps to World-Class Excellence in Your Life and Work” (St. Martin’s Press), Bowman and Butler detail strategies that can  be applied toward achieving success in all walks of life. In addition to Bowman, Charlie interviewed Phelps, four-time Olympian Allison Schmitt, Paralympian champion Jessica Long, and several other high-level athletes and coaches to help illustrate the full scope of Bowman’s coaching process.

“The Golden Rules” was published in the United States as well as Russia, the United Kingdom, Korea, France and Poland.
